Ah, the Island of Maybe. While most other guides focus on hiking, must-do experiences, and renting a car, I’ll instead provide a few of my favorite places for vibing in the cosy capital.

Bookstores & Cafes

Paname Café – cozy, hopping, interesting variety of seats and tables, I’m still trying to recreate their divine carrot cake

H. N. Jacobsens Bókahandil – directly connected to Paname Café, books in multiple languages, some art supplies, children’s toys

Býarbókasavnið – public library, check the windows for upcoming activities (e.g. a monthly discussion group of Faroese classics translated into English)

Kafe Umami – chill, tasty fresh made panini’s, good pastries,

Kaffihúsið – highly recommend the breakfast board #lifechanging

Kafé Kaspar – bagels, sammies, etc

Food & Drink

*dinner reservations are mandatory highly recommended*

Víngarðurin – French restaurant using local ingredients

etika Sushi – relaxed sushi joint, hope you like salmon, does have some premade sushi for quick takeaway

Katrina Christiansen – Scandi restaurant, fab

The Tarv – amazeballs cocktails. Ask for the off-menu “Ocean Honey”

Shopping

Öström – variety of locally made items, weather appropriate clothing and gear

EINSTAKT – locally made sweaters, locally designed clothes

Guðrun & Guðrun – locally designed high-fashion sweaters,

Leirlist – local potter, does ship internationally

Museums & Landmarks

Tinganes – quite possibly the oldest meeting place for a parliament, Faroese Home Rule still governs from here

Listasavn Føroya / The National (Art) Gallery of The Faroe Islands – I feel like the name says it all

Tjóðsavnið / Faroe Islands National Museum – showcases nature, culture, and history of the islands via a permanent display and an open air museum

Grocery Stores, Pharmacy, & the Mall

Mylnan – Handilskjarnin – supermarket in downtown

Inn við Grønlandsvegin – grocery story, long hours, painted a cheery rain-slicker yellow

Rúsdrekkasøla Landsins / National Liquor Store – Alcohol sales are nationally centralized

SMS – shopping mall, great on an exceptionally rainy day, might be able to find some dried whale meat in the grocery store here (proceeds go towards supporting the widow)

Apotek – Pharmacy located at the south end of the SMS Mall.
If it is after-hours and you want an OTC item, try their vending machine. It is immediately outside a south-west building exit

ATM – Also located in the SMS Mall. Putter up to the grocery store at north end – the ATM is just before the entrance, in where all the grocery carts and baskets are stacked
